3PL Fulfillment for Amazon FBA, FBM, and Reserve Inventory

Amazon sellers often need a 3PL to sit between inbound inventory and multiple Amazon workflows: FBA prep and replenishment, FBM orders, returns, and reserve stock that should not all be committed to one channel.

Operating model

What this channel changes inside the warehouse

01
FBA inventory may need inspection, labeling, prep, staging, and replenishment before it enters Amazon.
02
FBM orders require reliable marketplace order flow, parcel execution, and delivery-performance control from the 3PL; Amazon Business seller-fulfilled orders now carry a 90% Business Hour Delivery Rate requirement starting September 30, 2026.
03
MCF can now extend Amazon-held inventory into off-Amazon DTC channels with Prime delivery, which makes shared-inventory allocation, peak fees, and non-Amazon workflow coverage part of the fulfillment decision.
04
Reserve inventory needs allocation rules so FBA replenishment does not consume stock intended for DTC or wholesale.
05
AWD reserve-storage eligibility is now SKU-dependent: Amazon says AWD accepts sortable items smaller than 18 × 14 × 8 inches and under 20 lb, so larger or heavier items need a different reserve and replenishment path.
06
Seasonal FBA restrictions can affect heat-sensitive inventory; meltable items reopen in staged windows, which makes timing and climate exposure part of the inbound plan.
Provider questions

What to verify in the sales call

  1. Which FBA prep and replenishment workflows does the operating team handle today?
  2. How are FBM orders, cancellations, tracking, inventory updates, and Amazon Business delivery-performance exceptions connected to the warehouse?
  3. If MCF will serve Shopify or other off-Amazon channels, how will shared inventory be protected from stockouts across FBA and MCF demand?
  4. Can the operation report business-address delivery performance and show how carrier choice, handling time, and transit settings are managed for seller-fulfilled orders?
  5. Can the WMS separate AWD-eligible reserve stock, non-AWD reserve stock, FBA-bound, FBM, MCF, and other-channel inventory while keeping total stock visible?
  6. How does the facility protect temperature-sensitive or meltable inventory during seasonal staging and carrier transit?

Decisions beyond the integration

  • Import-heavy sellers may prioritize the inbound path from port or rail to reserve inventory.
  • FBM customer geography can make consumer-facing warehouse location more important than FBA replenishment geography.
  • MCF can reduce duplicated inventory across Amazon and off-Amazon channels, but brands should model whether a single Amazon-held pool creates concentration risk or limits nonstandard workflows.
  • Hybrid FBA plus DTC operations should model where the shared reserve stock is held and how often it is reallocated.
  • Bulky or heavier SKUs should be modeled separately because current AWD eligibility may remove AWD from the reserve-storage path.
  • Food, confectionery, supplement, and other heat-sensitive SKUs may need seasonal staging rules rather than one year-round replenishment cadence.

Frequently asked

Amazon 3PL FAQ

Why use a 3PL if I already use FBA?

A 3PL can hold reserve stock, prepare and replenish FBA inventory, support non-Amazon channels, and reduce the need to place all inventory inside one fulfillment network.

Can a 3PL fulfill Amazon FBM orders?

Yes if its systems and operating process can ingest marketplace orders, maintain inventory accuracy, meet the service level you sell, and return shipment status correctly.

Should FBA reserve stock be stored near a port?

It can make sense for import-heavy inventory, but the answer depends on inbound freight, Amazon replenishment destinations, other channels, storage economics, and how quickly reserve stock turns.
