3PL Lot Tracking, Expiration Management, and Recall Traceability
Lot tracking matters when inventory must remain traceable from receipt through shipment by batch, lot, manufacture date, expiration date, or another controlled identifier.
When this should be a hard filter in your 3PL search
What to ask before you compare price
- At which receiving and shipping scans is lot or expiration data captured?
- Can the WMS allocate inventory using FEFO, FIFO, quarantine, or customer-specific rules?
- How quickly can the warehouse produce a trace report for one affected lot?
What usually changes the quote
- Lot-level receiving and data capture
- Expiration-aware allocation and picking
- Quarantine or hold locations
- Recall, trace, and exception reporting

Lot tracking 3PL FAQ
What is lot tracking in a 3PL warehouse?
It is the ability to associate received inventory, on-hand stock, outbound orders, and returns with a specific lot or batch identifier so affected product can be traced and controlled.
What is the difference between FIFO and FEFO?
FIFO ships older received inventory first. FEFO prioritizes inventory with the earliest expiration date. Products with shelf-life constraints often need FEFO rather than simple receipt-date sequencing.
How do I test a 3PL’s lot-tracking capability?
Ask the provider to walk through a mock trace from one inbound lot to current inventory and outbound orders. A live demonstration is more useful than a generic yes/no answer.
